Soda blasting, dry ice or laser? Compare the job, not the video
Choose a cleaning method for a service business: compare the required finish, accepted area, media use and the complete job cost before buying equipment.

In short
A practical cleaning business needs a repeatable result on the customer's surface. Compare soda blasting, other abrasive media, pure dry ice and laser on an agreed test area, then count transport, preparation, cleaning and handover. No method wins every job. SodaBlast Systems publishes this guide as an equipment seller, not an independent testing laboratory.
A multi-media machine and soda are not the same thing
SB-500 Trailer is a SodaBlast Systems machine; soda is one cleaning medium. For a different coating or required surface profile, discuss other media approved for the actual configuration. Do not assume that putting soda into any blasting machine gives the same metering or result, or that every loose material can go into SB-500 Trailer. Confirm compatibility in the equipment documentation and the offer.
Four options: what to ask during a demonstration
| Method | Question to test | What to include in the job plan |
|---|---|---|
| Soda blasting | Can it remove this coating while preserving the agreed substrate condition? | Media supply, compressor, containment, residue collection and preparation for the next process. |
| Other approved abrasive media | Can it achieve the required cleanliness and surface profile? | Media grade, wear, dust control, collection, transport and disposal. |
| Pure dry ice | Does it achieve the required result, especially where corrosion is present? | Ice delivery and storage, air supply, site controls and removal of dislodged contamination. |
| Laser cleaning | Does the actual machine remove this coating at the required rate without unacceptable changes? | Work-zone controls, extraction, access to the surface, power supply and a measured trial. |
Where does pure dry ice have a limitation?
Cold Jet distinguishes light surface rust from pitted or heavy corrosion: its pure dry-ice process does not provide white-metal preparation. Dry ice mixed with abrasive is a different process. Cold Jet: rust removal (equipment supplier)
Ask the supplier to demonstrate your workpiece and acceptance requirement. A successful demonstration on loose dirt does not establish suitability for a different coating, corrosion depth or finish.
Does a laser merely burn every surface?
Fraunhofer IFAM describes selective laser coating removal while largely maintaining surface quality, depending on the materials and laser parameters. That does not establish performance on every coating or workpiece. Fraunhofer IFAM: surface decoating by laser
Compare the exact equipment and result. A short video alone does not show set-up time, extraction, corners, repeat passes, the next coating's requirements or the final cost per accepted square metre.
A fair trial before a business investment
- Record substrate, coating, thickness if known, corrosion and the customer's acceptance criteria.
- Use comparable test areas of the same workpiece; photograph the condition before and after from the same position.
- Record the machine, medium, nozzle, settings, operator and site conditions. Do not conceal preparation or repeat passes.
- Measure area accepted by the customer, total elapsed job time and quantities consumed. Record rejected areas and rework.
- Keep preparation, active cleaning, pauses and clean-up as separate time entries. Compare the complete job as well as cleaning time.
500 kg instead of 2,000 kg: what our customers report
SodaBlast Systems Polska reports feedback from customers who replaced their previous blasting machines with SB-500 Trailer: approximately 500 kg rather than 2,000 kg of medium in 8 hours, on the same material and surface. These are customer reports provided to the company, not a published controlled comparison. The underlying machine models, media grades, settings and measured area have not been supplied here. SodaBlast Systems Polska: customer reports (Polish)
Those reported quantities represent 75% less media mass. They do not establish four times the cleaning speed or a 75% reduction in the complete job cost. Ask for a trial on your intended work and verify the accepted finish, kg/m² and total time.
What should “eco-blasting” mean in a quotation?
Here, “eco-blasting” describes an aim to reduce avoidable media use and transport through job planning and controlled dosing. It is not a certification or a claim that blasting has no environmental impact. Record medium consumed, fuel or power, dust controls and waste collected. Lower media mass alone does not describe the entire environmental footprint; removed coatings also matter.
Use the cost per accepted square metre
Media consumption = kilograms used ÷ square metres accepted. Complete job cost per m² = assessment, travel, preparation, labour, media, energy, wear, clean-up, waste and allocated overheads ÷ accepted area. Use the same scope for each method. A low media bill cannot compensate for a finish the customer rejects.
Turn the comparison into a service-business decision
For a business based in a village, small town or city, first identify reachable customers and the work they actually outsource. Workshop restoration, facade projects and industrial maintenance are possible scenarios, not promised orders. Agree a trial with a real prospect before choosing equipment. A SodaBlast Systems discussion can then cover the SB-500 Trailer configuration, compatible media, training, service and working capital around those jobs.
Checklist
Bring this information to a supplier
- Photos and a representative test piece or accessible test area.
- An agreed finish and next process, including any required surface profile.
- A target customer group and realistic travel radius.
- A record of accepted m², full job time and consumption.
- A complete offer with equipment, training logistics, service and consumables.
Limitations
Scope and limits of this comparison
- This is guidance from an equipment seller, not an independent ranking or a performance guarantee.
- The customer consumption reports are not a dry-ice or laser comparison.
- Media and protective measures must suit the equipment, coating and site. Follow the documentation and site requirements.
- Choose using a documented trial. Buying a machine does not guarantee customers or income.
